Almaty Karakol transfer
Order a taxi from Almaty to Karakol through Karkara (Kegen) border checkpoint. For this trip you need 4×4 SUV to pass through mountain area. Ordinary taxi cabs prefer not to take this route because of road condition. But this trip is a real adventure and highly suggested to be done by this road if you head to Karakol. This transfer/tour includes visiting of 2 most interesting parts of Charyn Canyon – Valley of Castles and Moon Canyon.
Transfer in winter
This transfer is possible to be done all year round including winter season from the recent time. Just check in advance with Karkara/Kegen checkpoint by phone as the road can be closed if a strong snowfall has happened before.
Karkara border checkpoint working hours
Please note that Kegen/Karkara check point is working only from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Road from Almaty to Kyrgyzstan border is more than 300 kilometers and taxi trip would take around 5 hours, add 2-3 hours for photo stops and Charyn canyon visiting plus 3 hours driving from the border to Karakol (Kyrgyzstan) by mountain road. Total trip time of this adventure will be 11 – 12 hours. So, it is better to start early from Almaty around 7 a.m. to reach Karakol by 8 p.m.
