Kolsai Lakes

Kolsai Lakes, located in the northern Tien Shan mountains of Kazakhstan, are a group of three stunning mountain lakes known for their crystal-clear waters and scenic surroundings. Lakes are located near the border with Kyrgyzstan. The lakes are part of the Alatau mountain range.

Three lakes. Kolsai Lakes consist of three interconnected lakes.

  • Kolsai-1: The lower lake, easily accessible by car.
  • Kolsai-2: A higher-altitude lake that requires a moderate hike to reach.
  • Kolsai-3: The highest and smallest lake, accessible by a more challenging trek from Kolsai-2.

Scenery. The lakes are surrounded by dense coniferous forests, alpine meadows, and snow-capped peaks. The combination of blue lakes, greenery, and mountains creates a picturesque and tranquil setting.

Hiking Trails. Visitors can explore hiking trails that lead to each of the lakes. The hike to Kolsai-2 is particularly popular, offering panoramic views of the surrounding landscape.

Flora and Fauna. The area around Kolsai Lakes is rich in biodiversity, with diverse plant life and the possibility of encountering various bird species. Wildflowers bloom during the summer months.

Seasonal Variations. The lakes are accessible during the summer and early fall. In winter, the region is covered in snow, making access difficult. The best time to visit is typically from June to September.

Guided Tours. Many visitors opt for guided tours to Kolsai Lakes, especially if they are not familiar with the region. Local guides provide insights into the natural surroundings and assist with navigation.

Accessibility. First Kolsai lake which is the biggest one is accessible by car on a good paved road. Kolsai-2 and Kolsai-3 involve hiking, and reaching Kolsai-3 requires a more challenging trek.
