Direct Bus from Almaty to Karakol via Kegen and Karkara (2025/2026 Update)

As a local driver, I often provide transfers from Almaty to Karakol and back. It is a really long journey and quite costly. That is why I created this guide for independent travelers with tight budgets on how to get to Karakol from Almaty by bus, taking the most scenic direct route through Kegen (Karkara) border.

Traveling from Almaty to Karakol by bus has always required a long detour through Bishkek. But everything changed in September 2025, after full road reconstruction from the Kazakh border near Kegen (Karkara) to Tyup, a private operator launched the first direct Almaty–Karakol bus.

This new route cuts the distance nearly in half, saves hours of travel time, and most importantly, you can buy tickets online.

Why This New Bus Route Matters

  • Fastest way to reach Karakol from Almaty by bus
  • No need to transit via Bishkek
  • Border crossing at Karkara operates 24/7 since 2025
  • Affordable alternative to expensive private taxis (€350–€500)
  • Beautiful mountain scenery along the entire route

What the Border Crossing Is Like

The Karkara border crossing has become a traveler favorite because

  • It’s located in a stunning mountain valley
  • It is less crowded than Bishkek’s border points
  • The atmosphere is more relaxed
  • Checks are usually faster and smoother

You will need to carry your luggage for about 200 meters on foot. Bags may be scanned, but the process is straightforward.

Where to Buy Bus Tickets

You can purchase tickets online on these platforms:

1. tickets.kz (has English language interface, online payment, recommended)

Link: https://tickets.kz/en/bus

2. ma-sairan.kz

This is local less known service. Web site is in Russian/Kazakh languages only, automatic google translator would help.

3. Offline. Previously, tickets could only be purchased at the Sairan bus station ticket offices, and you had to arrive at least an hour before departure. Even now, this remains the most popular method.

Seat Selection

At the moment, seat selection is not available online. Seats are assigned manually before boarding.
➡️ Arrive at the Sayran bus station at least 1 hour early.

About the Bus

The bus is not new, but for its cost it is an excellent option. Up until 2025, the only way to reach Karakol via Kegen–Karkara was to hire an expensive private 4×4 taxi.

What about back ticket from Karakol to Almaty

This information is from from the ticket window of Central Bus Station in Karakol as of September 2025. Buses to Almaty run daily at 10:00 AM, and tickets (1200 Kyrgyz Som one way) can only be bought on the day of departure. The bus arrives at Sairan Station in Almaty.

Important details:

  • The bus route alternates daily: one day it departs from the Kyrgyz side, the next day from the Kazakh side.
  • The bus runs even with only one passenger, but if there are no passengers, it won’t operate that day. This means if the bus doesn’t come from Almaty, there won’t be a bus from Karakol either.
  • Buses are often half-empty or less, especially now. Cashiers recommend coming the day before to confirm.
  • There is no phone line for information yet.
